At 17, my life changed in an instant. On March 10, 1983, I found my mother brutally attacked in our home. Despite my efforts to save her, she tragically passed away. Rather than seeking justice, the Los Angeles Police Department made me their scapegoat, framing me for her murder. Convicted and sentenced to life, I spent over 26 years behind bars, fighting for my freedom.
In prison, I was cut off from so many creative pursuits, and my mind constantly drifted to the idea of escape — of using all the tools I had once loved. I dreamed not just of photography, but of all the ways I could express myself if only I had the freedom to explore. My art and creativity became a refuge, a mental gateway to hope in a place meant to extinguish it. As I fought tirelessly on my legal case, I envisioned the places I longed to visit: towering redwoods, endless ocean shores, and the quiet beauty of nature — all just beyond the walls and lethal fences that kept me caged.
Finally, after 9,653 days of wrongful imprisonment, my conviction was overturned and I was released in August 2009. Since that blessed, life-changing day years ago, I've dedicated myself to capturing the images I once only dreamed of. I fully embrace my own, very personal creative process, enjoying the freedom to work on my own terms, and absolutely loving it when I do. These works are more than pictures — they are the result of years of longing, of holding onto hope when everything felt hopeless. They represent the life I always knew was waiting for me on the other side.
But my journey isn’t just about reclaiming my freedom — it’s about seeking wisdom beyond the anger and fear that defined so much of my past. Today, I aspire to live with clarity and compassion, cutting through the nonsense that so often clouds our judgment. The charities I support, listed elsewhere on this site, reflect my deep belief in justice and healing, and in creating a better world for others.
Through my photography, I hope to share a glimpse of the beauty and resilience that kept me alive during those long years. Each image is a testament to survival, to the power of imagination, and to the belief that there is always something worth fighting for. I invite you to explore these pieces, not just as art, but as a reflection of the journey that brought me to where I am today.
Thank you for taking the time to experience this with me.
